Pharmacological Effect & Mechanism of Effect:
1. Hair tunic and prevention of hair loss: Trepenes and trepenoids found in Rosemary cause dilatation of capillaries and improvement of topical circulation of blood. Hair follicles are thus better fed. Topical application of Rosemary's essential oil improves blood circulation, which is a result of its stimulating effect on skin. In a double-blind, randomized, audit-controlled test, 84 patients afflicted whit Alopecia areata were studied for the effects of Rosemary's essential oil. These patients were divided into a test group pf 43 and a control group of 41 patients. The test group was given a compound of some essential oils including that of Rosemary with the oil base being jojoba and grape seed oil. The control group was given a mixture of jojoba and grape seed oil only, without Rosemary's or any other essence in it. Individuals in each group were asked to massage the oil compound they were given into their scalp for 2 minutes each night. The test lasted for 7 months and the effectiveness of the remedy was assessed through studying serial pictures taken from scalps of participants. These pictures were studied by two dermatologists (who were, of course, working independently from one another). Each patient's condition was assessed once at the end of the first three months and again at the end of the 7 months. Improvement was measured using a 6-points scale and computer analysis. According to the reported results, 19 patients or 44% in the test group and 6 patients or 15% in the control group responded to their respective medication (P=0.008). As evident from pictures, the test group responded to their medication considerably better (P=0.05). Researchers arrived to the conclusion that essential oil of Rosemary is a better remedy for Alopecia areata than a compound of carrier oils.
2. Remedy for Dandruff: Rosemary can prevent early baldness and also can be used for reducing dandruff. Rosemary's blood circulation stimulation effect can both help growth and conditioning of hair and reduce or prevent dandruff.
